Supreme Court Sides With Religious Institutions

The Supreme Court, once again, blocks state COVID-19 restrictions on religious gatherings.

January 1, 2021

The Supreme Court continues to side with religious institutions indicating that states do not have the ability to enforce stricter standards on religious establishments, churches, synagogues, and mosques, as they do on most commercial establishments.

"Even in a pandemic, the Constitution cannot be put away and forgotten," the court's conservative majority opinion said. "The restrictions at issue here, by effectively barring many from attending religious services, strike at the very heart of the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious liberty."

In the meantime, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers general guidelines for communities of faith to decrease the risk of the spread of COVID-19 encouraging individuals to practice social distancing of six feet, the use of masks in public settings, disinfection and ventilation, and promote hygienic practices.
